Our adult program is designed specifically for adults. We use “karate” as a generic term. Most traditional schools teach only one discipline. This is not a bad thing, however at IMA we include more than just punching and kicking.
Self DefenseWhat is important to learn is that martial arts and self defense are two completely different things. 95% of the curriculum you learn in any martial art is not practicle in a street fight. Martial arts does teach distance, timing and control. How to not panic. How to breathe, and how to avoid being a target. Combined with our traditional and sport karate, the adult class incorporates “Practicle Self-Defense”, which is not karate. Some of the most important keys to being Practicle is:
Our self defense curriculum was designed by master instructor Mike Welch and his father, the master mind behind “Practicle Self Defense” Mr Paul Welch. Paul has over 30 years of law enforcement, 15 years of martial arts, and is a certified instructor in DAT (defense and arrest tacticts), Rape and Aggression Defense, Krav Maga and life experience. FitnessOur program is a total fitness package combining strength, endurance and flexibility. We incorporate the latest exercise physiology, which assists in the development of all your muscular systems, building greater strength and definition. We give you excellent cardiovascular conditioning, expanding your heart and lung’s capacity while you burn off calories. The result is a tremendous increase in energy, giving you what you need to last all day long. Each class also includes a variety of stretching exercises that help you to avoid injuries and keep you feeling young and agile. DisciplineMany times when we think about the benefits of martial arts: self esteem, respect, self discipline and focus, we generally correlate that with children and not adults. The reality is that our program has the same affect for kids and adults alike. Of course adults learn differently and understand much more than kids, but the reinforcement is there. Some people spend hundreds of dollars on seminars and books to learn goal setting, publick speaking and time management skills, where the martial arts teach all of these things. Becoming a black belt means you must set your goal, have the disiplin to work for it and commit your time to it. It is alos very rewarding as you see yourself grow and feel your body become stronger and more fit.
